Enlist™ herbicides and in-crop dicamba herbicides

Hoegemeyer Hybrids
May 18, 2021

With planting well underway,  you may have questions about the recent changes in the in-crop dicamba herbicide labels. Here are some of the high points to note, including how these changes compare to EnlistTM herbicides.

What has changed Enlisttm herbicides in-crop dicamba herbicides

Length of registration

5-year registration, maintained uninterrupted since 2017

5 years

Follows two previous 2-year registrations and court-ordered registration cancellation in June 2020

Application calendar date cut-offs

None. Enlist herbicides can be applied from burndown to no later than R2 or full flowering stage

June 30 (soybeans)

Additional state guidance and restrictions may yet be announced

Tank-mix adjuvants

None required. 2,4-D choline in Enlist herbicides features inherent near-zero volatility

Every application MUST INCLUDE an approved pH buffering agent/volatility reduction adjuvant (as listed on the tank-mix website)

This is more specific guidance than previous registrations, which include advisory language that tank mixes with a pH of 5 or below have the potential to volatilize.

Downwind buffers

30'

No requirement to check Endangered Species Protection Bulletins for potential additional buffer requirements

Larger areas now required:

240' in non-endangered species areas

310 in endangered species areas

Applicators must check Endangered Species Protection Bulletins to confirm potential additional buffer requirements. Some areas subject to additional 57' omnidirectional buffer and larger downwind buffers.

Enlist herbicides continue to offer several convenient advantages for farmers in comparison to in-crop dicamba herbicides. The following label guidance has not changed:

What hasn't changed Enlisttm herbicides in-crop dicamba herbicides

Federal restricted use pesticide

No

Yes

Compatibility with soybeans without the respective trait

Can be applied when soybeans without the Enlist trait are adjacent and downwind

Non-dicamba-tolerant soybeans are susceptible to in-crop dicamba herbicides

Applicator certification

May be applied by persons under supervision of a certified applicator

Can only be applied by persons with a certified applicator license

Time-of-day application limitations

None

*must avoid temperature inversions

Can only apply from 1 hour after sunrise to 2 hours before sunset

Use of AIXR and AITTJ nozzles qualified for use?

These nozzles are qualified options that provide better coverage than ultra-coarse droplets

Not qualified. Many applicators use TTI nozzles with ultra-coarse droplets for drift control

Use for burndown with other crops

Labeled for burndown prior to planting crops without the Enlist trait

Cannot use for burndown with non-dicamba-tolerant crops

Tank-mix with qualified glufosinate

Can be tank-mixed with glufosinate, including Liberty® herbicide - a preferred tank-mix partner with Enlist One® herbicide

No qualified glufosinate tank-mix products

Tank-mix with qualified AMS

Enlist Duo® and Enlist One herbicides can both be tank-mixed with qualified AMS partners.

List available at EnlistTankMix.com

AMS prohibited from tank-mixing

Tank-mix with Durango® DMA®

Only K-salt glyhposate can be tank-mixed with in-crop dicamba herbicides

Glyphosate blend product availability

Keep in mind, this is just an overview. The limitations and advantages of soybean weed control technologies are multifaceted. Be sure to review product labels as well as the resources available on Enlist.com for more information.
